In 1976, a new underground rock magazine called "The New York Rocker" asked Lee
Childers for a centerfold. He gave them this montage of photos he had taken over the
previous few years to illustrate the diverse people one might run into on any night in
Max's Kansas City's famous Back Room. Some of them were famous already, some became famous
later, and some didn't. There between Andy Warhol & David Cassidy is Shayne Harris.

On August 10, 1973 the legendary band KISS plays their second show at the Hotel Diplomat,
Manhattan NYC, where they are introduced to Flipside producer Bill Aucoin. Within two
weeks KISS is signed to Neil Bogart's recently established Casablanca Records. One of the
opening acts for that show is LUGER, with drummer SHAYNE HARRIS. Luger guitarist IVAN KRAL
recalls the gig: "We played a very short set. It was maybe seven or eight songs.
I remember my brother came in and told me afterwards and told me, you guys look pretty
good, but those guys are outrageous". Click the image to view the excerpt from

Kiss bassist Gene Simmons also mentions
LUGER in the Kiss Book "Behind The Mask". On page 51, he says: "....At
our next show, Gene recalls, Luger was the opening act. .."

In December 1973, within the pages of the rock-rag CREEM, music journalist Dave Marsh "dredges
the subterranean scuzz-holes of NYC to expose a whole new generation of sleazodelic
ratpacks". Amongst the rubble, the band Luger with a quote beneath their picture
stating "...Iggy Pop may produce them, and if he does there might be a real teen
idol in the band, drummer SHAYNE HARRIS". Click the image to go to the 3rd

ALL THAT GLITTERS:
Luger, along with SHAYNE HARRIS appears in Melody Maker (U.K.) newspaper, October 6,
1973 in the article All That Glitters Is Not Rock by noted
music journalist Dave Marsh. A Lengthy, well-written article, that profiled virtually
every New York Glam band: Street Punk, Luger, Teenage Lust, Wayne County, The Harlots Of
42 Street, the New York Dolls, and KISS. The article also appeared in NEWSDAY on August
19, 1973. See an image of the article (although, you really can't read anything from it).
SHAYNE HARRIS continued his music career throughtout the 80s and 90s. In 1990 he hooked up
with guitarist and songwriter Joe Kirsch, guitarist Carl Battista, and bassist Frank
Scavone to form WHITE LIE.
REFERENCES TO LUGER:
Kiss formed out of the ashes of
Wicked Lester, KISS honed their musical chops at local clubs like the Daisy and Coventry,
KISS's equivalent to the Cavern. Along with such long-forgotten New York City-based acts
as LUGER, the Brats, Isis, the Harlots Of 42nd Street and
Street Punk, KISS, initially, was just another hard-working band that was a part of the
city's then-burgeoning rock scene.
LUGER were a
glam band from N.y. who had recorded some music, but man where is it now ? SHAYNE HARRIS
was their drummer, and IGGY POP was supposed to produce their music, but what happened ?
IVAN KRAL played in Blondie, Iggy Pop, Shaun Cassidy , and Patti Smith. As a fixture
in the 70's New York rock scene, Ivan played with many notables, including Debbie
Harry/Blondie, Patti Smith, Iggy Pop, glam band Luger, David Peel and the Lower East Side,
John Cale, Chris Spedding, Band of Outsiders and various underground artists.
Rik Fox (WASP guitarist): "About
1975. I played the infamous N.Y.C. club-haunt, "MAX'S KANSAS CITY", and
C.B.G.B's with a group called "THE MARTIAN ROCK BAND".... We hung out with all
the cool bands: N.Y. DOLLS, THE RAMONES, THE BRATS, THE PLANETS, LUGER
and many of the bands that came out of that great N.Y. Rock Explosion. "
