The Shell Guy:
Download the zip file here
OS: Windows
COST: Free (As with all of my free software, I appreciate an e-mail from you telling me that
you are using it)
The shell guy makes it easy for you to access your frequently used applications,
directories or stuff that is otherwise a pain in the butt to find (character map, paint,
calculator, etc.). You configure it for what you need to access. I use it everyday. I
place it in my Startup, and keep it minimized in my tray for easy access to my frequently
used applications.
- No installation is required
- It adds no files to your system other than the Executable and the INI
files that you download and place.
- It adds nothing to the system registry
- It contains no spyware
- It's free for use.
- The Shell Guy zip file comes with a pre-configured INI file that will
provide shortcuts to apps that I use often. However, you can change as you require. See
configuration.
Installation:
Your system should include all required supporting files. If not,
simply Google for any DLL or other supporting files in which you get a "missing
file" error for.
- Download the zip file here
- Unzip, and place the following 2 files in any directory
- THE_SHELL_GUY.exe
- shellguy.ini
- Create a shortcut to THE_SHELL_GUY.exe and place it on your desktop
or Startup folder
Configuration:
- Enter the name you want to display on the button in the SHORT TITLE
field
- Enter the path and the app executable in the FULL PATH AND EXE field.
You can usually find this information by right clicking on the application, selecting
PROPERTIES, and copying the information from the TARGET field.
- Example: The command utility is located in
C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe
- Use the following example to access frequently used directories from
the app.
- Example: c:\windows\explorer.exe C:\windows will open the WINDOWS
DIRECTORY
- Do not include quotes or commas in the path field.
- Because so many of the Window utility apps are found in
C:\windows\system32, the field is pre-populated with that path.
- Use the ADD IT button to add it to your app list. The app is
automatically added to the next available button.
- You can add as many apps to the list. However, only the first 10 in
the list will display in the buttons.
Rearranging the button assignments:
- Select an app in the app list then use the UP (/\) DOWN (\/) arrows
to arrange the app in the button order.
- Once in the preferred order, use the BUTTON IT, REFRESH IT button to
execute the button order.
- Use the DELETE (X) button to delete the app from the list. The button
will NOT delete the actual application from your system.
Testing & Editing Extra's (starting version 1.0.4)
- Use the TEST BUTTON to test the full path and exe before adding it.
- DOUBLE CLICK on the list box to place the SHORT TITLE and FULL PATH
of the selected item into the fields to allow you to build on or correct existing paths.
